Cherries and FruitSecurity Holland
The cherry is a small, round fruit which often contains a stone. Technically speaking, the cherry is a stone fruit. Almost nothing is known about the history of the cherry. Cherries are divided into two different types: the sweet cherry (Prunus avium) and the sour cherry (Prunus cerasus). In Belgium, the sour cherry is simply called 'kriek'. The sweet cherry is mainly consumed fresh. And the sour cherry is mainly used for industrial processing.
Since the 1990s, cultivation has been on the rise due to the emergence of new varieties. And by using weaker rootstocks. This keeps the size of the tree smaller. As a result, trees come into production earlier and harvesting becomes less labour-intensive.
