Like cherry growers and berry growers, wine growers are increasingly facing the Suzuki fruit fly. Due to the lack of plant protection products, this is starting to become a huge problem.
Fruitsecurity has a special hail net system for grape cultivation. The jacket system. This system saves work and, of course, provides protection against hail.
But is it also possible to use this system with insect net instead of hail net? I would be happy to sell you yes. And much you supply insect nets. Unfortunately, it is a slightly more difficult answer than yes.
Fruitsecurity GmbH, which thoroughly tests all its systems, has done research on this. This research shows that much more mould than desirable develops under insect netting.
The mesh size of insect netting is so small that it remains too moist under the system and the wind cannot blow the moisture away.
So does it mean it is not happening?
Insect nets do get used. Sometimes insect nets are pulled across the whole plot. Or it is mounted as in Jacket system, so per row. We have also seen growers attaching the insect net with Velcro.
We are happy to submit all these considerations to you, the wine grower. We hope it contributes to your cultivation. For us, this blog shows again what a challenge fruit growing is facing with the European Union's upcoming farm to fork programme.
