NEW: Hand sewing machine (type: RJW1222)

Hail nets and woven films are naturally important components of covers in fruit growing and arboriculture. Hail nets and woven films protect the crop against harmful weather conditions such as hail, wind and frost. Over time/years, nets and films can become damaged due to age or high winds. It is important to repair this damage quickly to prevent further damage to the cover and ultimately the crop.

What is the best way to sew with a hand sewing machine?

Here are some steps you can follow to repair hail nets and woven film with a hand sewing machine:

  1. Cleaning of damaged surfaces if necessary;
    • Before you begin repairing, clean the damaged piece thoroughly. Remove dirt, dust and leaves that are located on the net and foil.
  2. Set up the sewing machine;
    • Make sure the thread runs through the sewing machine properly and that the needle is positioned correctly. The thread should be tight, but not so tight that it breaks.
  3. Sewing;
    • Start sewing at the beginning of the damaged piece. From there you can slowly work towards the end of the damaged piece. For diligence, you can also sew the damaged piece 2-3 times so that it is stronger.
  4. Finish with knots.
    • When you get to the end of the damaged piece knot the end of the thread. This so that the stitches made will stay in place..

You can repeat the above steps for all damaged pieces of hail nets and foils within your cover.

Tips for repairing

  • Use a strong, durable sewing thread to do the repair correctly. For example, cotton thread breaks quickly, while polyester sewing thread lasts longer;
  • Sew multiple times over the damaged piece. This strengthens the sewing edge and if you missed stitches the first time you will include them the second time;
  • With foils, it is better to make the repairs in dry weather. This so that the foil is dry while sewing.
  • If you have no experience with a (hand) sewing machine, practice on a piece of cardboard before starting the repair.
  • Avoid putting too much force on the needle and make sure the thread does not get stuck anywhere in the machine. Otherwise, the needle may break or further damage the mesh.
  • When repairing larger holes or tears, it is sometimes helpful to use a piece of extra net or foil to cover the hole. This helps with the strength and longevity of the repair.
