Frost and FruitSecurity Holland
In spring, when night-time temperatures drop to around freezing and fruit trees are in bud, fruit growers need to protect their crops. If no action is taken, the buds may freeze to death. If the buds freeze to death, the harvest can be delayed for a number of months, resulting in huge losses.
Early flowering fruit species have more chance on frost damage than late flowering fruit species. Different consequences of frost damage can be observed. There can be reduced fruit set, a smaller number of pips or no pips growing through (moulting) and frost rings/ruffled fruit.
How can you prevent frost damage? There are many different solutions to prevent frost damage. Some of them are described below:
-
Sprinkling/irrigation.
-
Frost ovens.
-
Hail net or foil system.
-
Or a combination (if possible) of the above.
Without action against frost there is no flower, without a flower there is no fruit, without a fruit there is no income.
